The Gospel: What it is and how to share it

What is the Gospel?

The gospel is the good news of Jesus Christ! It is the truth about the condition which plagues all mankind, known as sin, and what God has done to overcome sin on our behalf.

While it can be communicated in many different ways, the gospel contains 6 core truths:

  1. Humans are all sinful and cannot be good enough
  2. God sent His Son Jesus, who is fully God and fully Man
  3. Jesus was the perfect sacrifice — He was without sin
  4. He died for our sins and took our penalty
  5. On the third day, He rose from the grave and defeated death
  6. We are saved by grace through faith

Why is it important to share the Gospel with others?

The most important question anyone will ever answer is found in Mark 8 where Jesus asks “Who do you say that I am?”. Therefore, the gospel is by nature some of the most important words we might ever speak, as it answers that question with certainty about who Jesus is and what He has done for us. Here are just a few reasons why we should frequently be sharing the gospel with others:
  • We are called to do so by Jesus Christ Himself (Matthew 28:18-20)
  • The Gospel is only good news if it gets there in time. (Romans 10:13-15)
  • Without the Gospel, no one will enter the Kingdom of God (John 14:6)
  • We should feel compelled to do so as believers (1 Corinthians 9:16)

3 Components to a Salvific Gospel Message

The message of the Gospel is the good news God uses to inform, equip, and establish His people and save the lost.
  1. Knowledge of the Gospel is necessary for salvation. The message of the Gospel informs the sinner of their need and opportunity for salvation.
  2. Messengers of the Gospel are necessary for salvation. There is nowhere and no one out of reach from God. But without faithful messengers, how would they come to learn about the Gospel?
  3. Acceptance of the Gospel is necessary for salvation. You can learn the knowledge of the Gospel and hear it preached, but it takes a connection with it to be saved. Acceptance of the Gospel is an action: humbling of self and exalting of Jesus.
